Harry (10) and Tom (8) travelled to Malawi with their father and grandmother in half term this October 2017. The purpose of the trip was to understand the Malawi way of life and to put solar power and mosquito nets into a local school.
In the summer of 2016, a group from 25th Stirling (Dunblane) Boys' Brigade travelled to Malawi to renovate classrooms in two local primary schools in the district of Mulanje. They travelled with RSC partner charity Classrooms for Malawi - a Scottish charity who rebuild and renovate classrooms in Malawi using local paid builders and volunteers from Scotland.
Raising money for your charity can be a family affair - as shown by an inspirational group of families who brought their children to Malawi to learn first-hand the challenges of rural communities and get involved in a special challenge of their own!
Every year Royal Holloway University, London brings a group of 30-40 students Malawi for a weeks study trip. Students interested in development processes can examine the role of international aid and NGOs, as well as community-based initiatives and state-led education, health and infrastructure programmes.
An eight-day learning trip to Malawi during university spring break. Each year University of North Carolina bring a group of 12 students to Malawi as the culmination of their spring semester social work course “NGOs and Social Development in Malawi.” Unlike traditional study abroad programs which primarily focus on cultural immersion, this class requires undergrad and graduate students from a mix of disciplines -social work, public health, exercise science and business administration - to put their knowledge of international social work practices to use in an unfamiliar culture.
In 2013 and 2015 St Margaret’s Academy came to Malawi and worked with a youth group on the shores of Lake Malawi. Each year they have worked side by side with the community to create educational facilities to assist the village in providing accessible education to young people in the area. St Margaret’s are committed to working in Malawi and are returning in 2017 with 40 students to work on the next initiative.
Kingussie High School have travelled to Malawi for the past 5 years and linked with Muloza Community Day School in the Mulanje District of Malawi. With a standard group of around 20 pupils and 3 staff Kingussie spend 2/3 weeks in Malawi every few years to work with their linked school on education projects, sports and workshops with the students. They always find time to head out on safari and hit the shores of Lake Malawi for some much deserved rest and relaxation!
Linking with Microloan Foundation USA (MLF) this trip brought a group of students to Malawi to learn more about micro-finance and the effects small loans can offer women living in poverty. Students learnt how microfinance works “on-the-ground,” and had the opportunity to collaborate with MLF on a variety of projects.
RSC are an active member of The Scotland Malawi Partnership. Scotland's links with Malawi date back to 1859 and the travels of Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone. Today, more than 94,000 Scots and 198,000 Malawians are actively involved in community-led partnerships between the two nations. The Scotland Malawi Partnership exists to help coordinate, represent and support the many people-to-people and community-to-community links between Scotland and Malawi. We are an independent, politically-neutral charity core funded by the Scottish Government.
Day 1
Your first day in Malawi. Meet your RSC Guide and travel to your linked school. A welcome reception will kick start your experience and you will join the school in singing and dancing to celebrate your arrival- Malawi style! Spend the day acclimatising at the school and meeting the teachers and pupils. Accommodation is in a nearby hostel (BB)
Day 2
Arrive at the school after breakfast and get started on your planned activities. Assist the teachers with their lessons, run drama and craft workshops, take part in afternoon activities. Return to your hostel for supper with your RSC Guide. (BB)

Travel to Liwonde National Park for a
day safari on the Shire River & in 4x4 vehicles. After your safari you will drive on to Lake Malawi arriving in the late afternoon. Spend the evening on the Lake
of Stars with supper on the beach. (BB)
Day 8
A day spent on the shores of Lake Malawi. Chill on the beach in a hammock, or head out on a boat trip or kayak to a nearby island for a picnic lunch. Life on Lake Malawi moves a little slower and is ideal for some much needed rest and relaxation whilst soaking up the local culture (BB)
Day 9
Arrive back at your linked school and continue your prepared activities. A fun afternoon activity might be a mini olympics competition- a great way to get the whole school involved!

Your last day with your linked school. An end of trip party is a lovely way to finish the trip off. Your school will want to say thank you and it is great excuse to have some local Malawian food and learn how to dance with your fellow students- Malawi style!

Meet your RSC Guide and travel to your linked community. The youth group will be there to greet you and tell you about what you will be doing over the coming days. Accommodation is in a nearby hostel.
Day 2
Arrive in the village and meet the Youth Group for a morning briefing and village walk to acclimatise to your surroundings. The afternoon will be spent preparing your week & meeting the local chief.
Day 3
Your project days aim to immerse students in village life. Activities can involve:

Day 9
Arrive back at your community and settle back into village life. You might decide to join the youth group in preparing a day of workshops and drama at the local village school.

Your project days aim to immerse students in village life. Activities can involve Homebased Care and Healthcare Team work, assisting with the youth library project or working on the tree seedling project.

Transfer to Mulanje Mountain (1 hour south of Blantyre). Spend the following day learning about climate change challenges, deforestation and wildlife on the reserve, including hiking to a nearby waterfall for a refreshing swim. (BB)
Day 3
After breakfast transfer 1 hr to the beautiful tea estates of Thyolo for a day of workshops and interactive learning on the sustainable practices and fair trade methods of Malawi's first Fair Trade Tea Estate (try out their huge selection of specialist teas!) (SC)
Day 4
Today you will visit a working sugar estate to learn about fair trade methods of Malawi's leading sugar producer. Spend lunch at their local wildlife reserve before arriving at your safari lodge for an evening game drive. (FB)
Day 5
Rise early to the sounds of the bush. Take a safari drive through Majete Wildlife Reserve with a talk on conservation activities in Malawi, with a focus on deforestation, the Black Rhino & poaching. (FB)
Day 6
Homestay 1: Visit one of our community based organisations to volunteer in a project and take part in painting a classroom, renovating a hut or similar activities depending on the project's needs assessments at the time. Stay with a local family and take part in their daily lives learning about their cultural traditions. (FB)

After a village breakfast and Malawian farewell- plenty of dancing! Head back to Blantyre for a final meal with your guide and summary workshop of your trip at the RSC Travel Barn. A chance to pick up some curios for your family and visit the local market. (BB)

A farewell breakfast with your RSC Guide before heading to the airport and connecting with your international flight.
